Dir en Grey

Dir en Grey was formed in Osaka in January 1997, with Kyo (vocals), Kaoru (guitar), Die (guitar), Toshiya (bass), and Shinya (drums). They have formed one of the most successful rock bands in the history of Japan. They originally called themselves "La:Sadies," however they eventually changed it to something with more spice: "Dir en Grey."

Their popularity started in 1998 when their single "I'll" broke Indie sales records and hit # 7 on the Oricon chart in Japan. Immediately afterwards, Yoshiki (you know, the leader of X-Japan) put them under his record label. They signed a major contract in early 1999 and released three singles simultaneously, all in the top of Japanese music rankings.

After the release of their first major album, Gauze, and an extensive tour, Dir en Grey released a live video of the infamous Osakajou Concert. The band decided to resign from Yoshiki's production, and returned to Indies music.
